The Puffer Model Steam Locomotive
Woo woo! This Puffer is a model of the very first steam locomotive ever invented. It was the gears and kinetics and overall simplicity that caught my attention. The Puffer is shown here on a 42" (1065mm) straight track. The cross bars at each end tell the locomotive when to reverse. |
This is an 1803 drawing of the original locomotive created by Richard Trevithick in Cornwall, England. When I saw this delightful picture of gears and wheels, I just had to create one of these lovelies. |
This Puffer model is battery operated, and powered by a geared motor inside the boiler. |
Here is a view of the right side of the locomotive and its giant flywheel. |
This front view shows the switch underneath that allows the Puffer to travel forward and back on a track. The Puffer will also travel around a circular track a minimum of 30" (760mm) in diameter, but a 42" (1065mm) dimeter circular track with a Christmas tree in the center of it might be even better. |
The Puffer is just as happy to chug along on the floor without a track. And just look at that cute little face on her front! And another (not so cute) in the back! Bill Miller recently sent us this adorable little video of Puffer all dressed up and merrily rolling down his homemade tracks. Bill made his Puffer adaptable to a nine volt power supply instead of the battery as written in the plans. As always, Bill, thank you for your whimsical wondrous videos and pictures!
