NuLuna Calendar Clock Orrery

Father Time has struck again, this time with a calendar/orrery! Behold NuLuna, an astronomical clock, calendar and orrery. (Insert trumpet fanfare here).

The basic plan of the NuLuna is shown in the drawing on the left. Its creation has been a collaborative effort with input from four amazing artists and certified GearWizologists. They each modified the basic NuLuna plan using their individual creativity, talents and artistry.

On the right above you see an amazing interpretation by my friend and co-creator, Grumps. His vision was to create a tabletop version and to do so necessitated a completely different internal clockworks (no plans are available for Grump's clockworks).

The phase of the moon is shown at the top of the calendar, along with the Moon's age. The day of the week and day of the month wheels rotate, and in the lower section we can view red and white spheres representing the Sun and Moon as they travel through the zodiac around a stationary Earth.

Below is a Richard's interpretation on the NuLuna. In this picture, his magnificent calendar is shown predicting the lunar eclipse that occurred on September 17, 2024.

Richard is an artist and musician at WoodBlues and chose to hand letter his displays. Richard has added the NuLuna's Moon's Nodes option to his calendar. The Moon's Nodes option not only allows for the prediction of possible eclipses, but also lets us view the Moon's deviations from the ecliptic on its monthly trip around the Earth.

This side view of Richard's NuLuna allows us to see the self-winding clockworks at the back, and the calendar's gearing in the center.

In the video below we see Jim's beautiful interpretation of the NuLuna. We can see that it is nearly 8:25 on Thursday, June 6th. In two places we see the calendar is showing a waining Moon that is almost new. At the top is a visual representation of the Moon's phase, and at the bottom we can see the Sun and Moon spheres nearly in line with the stationary Earth. The possibility of a solar eclipse is explained in the diagrams just below the Moon's phase.

Prolific builder Ken created another excellent and artistic example of the NuLuna and has customized his beautiful build with a pair of decorative brass hands. Ken's NuLuna is pictured below in his gallery, between Marble Strike and Leeds.

Below is a video showing Grump's spring-driven tabletop NuLuna in motion. Grumps used his own personal genius and the clockworks from my Harmonic Oscillator to create his calendar. As mentioned previously, there are no plans available for Grump's spring driven, tabletop mechanism.
