Cogitation Kinetic Sculpture
Saying that Cogitation is a kinetic sculpture would be an understatement. There is constant movement happening simultaneously in multiple parts of this sculpture. Not only do her twin, almost 20" diameter display wheels rotate first one way and then the other, but her large counterbalanced arms are seen randomly releasing and stopping her dual escapement system. |
Cogitation is shown here with her two complex display wheels. The plans for Cogitation also have a pattern for a much simpler set of display wheels that are easily interchangable. Or, if you choose, the sculpture can even be more simply constructed by creating a one wheel, one escapement kinetic sculpture. This is a design that is easily adapted to many functional variations. |
Cogitation was designed by Clayton Boyer and Forrest Burnett and built by Forrest. The sculpture is shown here with Forrest's artistic interpretation of the weights and counterweights that drive the mechanism. Forrest's Cogitation is shown in the YouTube video below: |
Cogitation is designed to run for thirty minutes. Her smooth, quiet, rhythmic operation, interrupted only every few moments by the click of the escapement, is an amazing thing to watch. Below is video of an amazing kaleidoscope variation by Master Gear Wizzologist Ken Duffy (and be sure to check out his kaleidoscope variation of the Whirly sculpture on the Whirly page.) |
