This may
be the perfect “cut loose” quilt.
These hearts are free form and pieced like a crazy patch block, with
only ONE seam
to match in the entire block! This quilt is like a much-needed vacation—lots
of color and energy and fun—with no stressing out about precision.
I had so much fun making this one that I couldn’t wait to share
it with you.
What to bring:
1. Sewing machine with sharp needle, preferably an 80/12. If you’re
planning on using batiks, treat yourself to a Schmetz Microtex needle—it
glides through those tough batiks like butter. If you haven't changed
your needle in a while, now is the time. Don't forget your 1/4" foot
or guide, foot pedal, bobbins and manual (if you need it).
2. Rotary cutter, rulers and mat. Bring a variety of rulers, as we
will be cutting a variety of square sizes. A 6 ½” square
ruler is wonderful, if you have one.
3. General sewing supplies: straight pins, a seam ripper, fabric scissors,
neutral cotton thread
4. Fabric requirements for 47 X 59" quilt: Heart
Fabrics (can be scraps) 1 ¾ yard total
Heart Background(s) (can be scraps) 2 ¾ yard total
Inner Border (Pieced) ½ yard
Outer Border (Pieced or Continuous) 1 yard if pieced, 1 ¾ yard
if continuous
Binding ½ yard
To complete your quilt, you
will need a piece of batting that is 55 X 67". You will also
need backing fabric, pieced to approximately 57 X 69.”
If you want to do some cutting work in advance, AND YOU HAVE ONLY
ONE BACKGROUND FABRIC AND/OR HAVE NO QUESTIONS ABOUT BACKGROUND COLOR
PLACEMENT, you can cut the following in advance:
From your Heart fabric, cut (96) 3 X 6” rectangles
From your Background fabric, cut (48”) 5” squares.
From your Background fabric, cut (48) 3 ½” squares.
From your Background fabric, cut (48) 5 X 7” rectangles.
***If you have multiple background fabrics and/or questions about placement,
just cut a few of each of the above sizes to get yourself started—don’t
cut up all your fabric! You may change your mind! I never finish a
quilt the way I started it.**** Optional:
bring some batting and muslin squares if you would like to learn
some machine quilting tips. Also, don’t forget your
free-motion foot and some fun thread.
