Supplies to bring
to class:
1. Sewing machine in working order.
2. Thread in neutral color like beige (if you are using light-colored fabric)
or black (if most of your fabric is dark blue or black.) Cotton thread is preferred,
but bring what you have.
3. General sewing supplies: sewing needles, fabric scissors, seam ripper, and
fine, sharp straight pins
4. Rotary cutter, ruler and mat. A small thin ruler for drawing little lines
on fabric is good too.
5. Markers that will clearly mark lines on light fabrics and dark fabrics.
Some suggestions for light fabrics are fine, mechanical pencil or Bic fine
point ink pens (not marker type) and silver colored pencil or chalk pencil
for dark fabrics. The marks you make will end up in the seam allowances, so
your markers don't have to be wash-out type. I will be discussing alternatives
to marking fabrics, such as drawing lines on your machine with a sharpie or
the little gizmo called "the Angler". Bring the markers so that you
can decide which method you like.
6. Fabric--100% cotton only please. To make the class sample lap quilt, you
will need approximately 2 1/2 yards total of assorted Christmas fabrics to
make the stars. The small red border will take approximately 1/2 yard and the
large green border about 1 1/2 yard. Binding your quilt will probably require
another 1/2 yard. You don't have to buy all your fabrics first, as we will
be making stars all day and you can probably decide on your border later. If
you like a more planned look, feel free to buy everything in advance. The finished
size is 53 X 58, so you will eventually need a piece of backing and batting
about 63 X 68. For quilting, nylon thread is wonderful and very forgiving if
you're a beginner.
7. Note: To make the small wallhanging, bring small amounts of star fabrics
and inner border, but bring approximately a yard for the large border and binding.
That's it! Let's sew!!! |
