Mariner's Compass
Intermediate Sewing Skills Required
Are you ready for a challenge? Relax; it’s easier than it looks. Mariner’s Compass is a fascinating pattern with limitless variations. As a matter of fact, since you will be learning to draft your own Mariner’s Compass in this class, no two compasses will be exactly alike and you will have your own original design to complete. This class will be relatively fast-paced, so come prepared for a day of sewing and you may just leave class with a completed compass as well as ideas for several more—I know from experience that it’s hard to stop at just one!
Supplies
1. 18” clear plastic ruler with holes down the middle (C-thru type ruler or Quilter's Drafting ruler)
2. Large cutting mat, at least 23 X 35 kind. If you own a smaller one, I think Julie has a few you can borrow. I also have one to lend out. Please make arrangements to borrow one ahead of time.
3. Adjustable drafting compass--get one with a real pointy point, not the dull plastic kid's safety kind. (The metal kind with really sharp points are best.) The plastic kind won't fit into the holes of the drafting ruler and they slide around too easily.
4. Sharp pencils and big eraser (mechanical pencils with .5mm lead are excellent.)
5. Paper scissors
6. Small roll of masking tape, any width
7. Reynold's freezer paper (I will supply if you can’t find it--I did see it at the Wal Mart and the Kapaa Long's in the plastic wrap section)
8. One small sheet template plastic
9. Sewing machine and sewing supplies including fine straight pins, seam ripper, neutral thread, rotary cutter, ruler, mat. Yes, we will definitely be sewing (not just designing), so come prepared to sew, sew, sew!! To finish your project, you will need good quality fine nylon thread like YLI. Ask at Kapaia Stitchery if you are unfamiliar with this item.
10. Fabric
· Pick out a border fabric that you like and bring at least a yard of it.
· Then pick out a non-directional, non-“busy” background fabric to match your border fabric, at least ½ yard. Keep the background fabric simple—make sure there is enough contrast between fabric to be used in the star and the background. It is easy to lose your star points if the fabric is too busy! Test fabric against background by folding star point fabric into a sharp point and laying it against the background.)
· Bring an assortment of coordinating fabrics to match your border and background. Be sure to include lots of small textures and small prints (or solids), as these are good for the star points. You will need an assortment of lights, mediums and darks.
WHEN IN DOUBT, BRING EVEN MORE FABRIC TO CLASS!!!!!
