Keiki Hula

Keiki Hula by Lisa Boyer, 2002

Ready for a luau? Let’s piece a cute little keiki hula show! Paper piecing makes this pattern fun, fast and accurate. Paper piecing experience is helpful, but not absolutely required. Quilt finishes approximately 39” wide X 18” high.

Supplies to bring to class:
1. Sewing machine in working order. If you haven’t changed your needle in a while, now is the time. An 80/12 sharp needle is ideal, 90 is second best.
2. Thread in neutral color like beige (if you are using light-colored fabric) or dark grey (if most of your fabric is dark blue, grey or black.) Cotton thread is preferred.
3. General sewing supplies: sewing needles, fabric scissors, a fine seam ripper (for those tiny paper piecing stitches), and fine, sharp straight pins.
4. 12” Paper piecing ruler
5. Paper scissors and glue stick.
6. Rotary cutter, ruler and mat.
7. Fabric required is as follows:

Outer Border Fabric including binding: ¾ yard on crosswise grain OR 11/4 on lengthwise
Inner Border Fabric: ¼ yard
Background: ¾ yard
Hula Skirts: 1/4 yard
Skin of Hula Kids 5 skin colors: 1/8 yard each
Hair of Hula Kids: 1/8 yard black or brown
Bikinis of Hula Girlies: Tiny scraps to match buttons
Batting 24” X 44” piece: (2/3 yd)
Backing 24” X 44” piece: (2/3 yd)
Buttons: Two 5/8” buttons per girlie

Bring any embellishments you can think of: beads, flower buttons, tiny leis—the fun is all up to you.
