Half Log Cabin

Talk about easy! This quilt is completely strip pieced and fast, fast, fast. Make it up in funky Christmas colors, tropical tones, or just about any color of scraps you happen to have on hand--it's very versatile. The layout sheets that follow will give you some idea of the creative things that you can do with this block. The amazing thing about this block is that all of these designs are made of 48 of the same block; the trick is all in the way you lay them out.

What to bring:
1. Sewing machine with sharp needle, preferably a 90/14 or 80/12. If you haven't changed your needle in a while, now is the time. Don't forget your 1/4" foot or guide, foot pedal, bobbins and manual (if you need it).
2. Rotary cutter, ruler and mat. If you have any small rotary rulers, you may want to bring a handy small one in addition to your large one. A square-up type ruler would be good too, if you have one.
3. General sewing supplies: straight pins, a seam ripper, fabric scissors, neutral cotton thread
4. Minimum fabric requirements for 48 X 60" quilt:

Total Dark Scraps 1 7/8 yards
Total Light Scraps 1 1/8 yards
Inner Border 1/2 yard
Outer Border 1 1/2 yard
Binding 1/2 yard

To complete your quilt, you will need a piece of batting that is 54 X 66". You will also need backing fabric, approximately 54 X 66" also (a 3 yard piece of fabric can be easily made into this size.)

The Lewis Wedding Quilt, Lisa Boyer 2003

A half log cabin queen-sized quilt. This is the wedding quilt I wrote about making in my book, "Stash Envy." Look closely to see the purple--but not too close--you'll see the black spiders!
