Beginning Paper Piecing--The Daffodil

Come find out why this piecing technique is so popular! Paper piecing is accurate, fast and fun. We will learn the basics of paper piecing while we piece this cute little potted daffodil wallhanging. This is an adaptation of a Shirley Liby design; her quilt software and book information will be available for purchase before class.

What to bring:
1. Sewing machine with sharp needle, preferably a 90/14 or 80/12. Other needles are too small or too large. If you haven't changed your needle in a while, now is the time.
2. Rotary cutter, ruler and mat.
3. Paper piecing ruler, 12”
4. General sewing supplies: fabric and paper scissors, a few fine straight pins, a fine seam ripper, neutral color thread to blend with your fabrics.
5. Glue stick
6. Lunch, if you want to eat in. We will have a break if you want to go out.

Fabric Requirements:
Background ¾ yard
Small Border ¼ yard
Large Border ½ yard
Flower ¼ yard or scraps
Flower Pot ¼ yard or scraps
Flower Pot accent color ¼ yard or scraps
Leaves ¼ yard or scraps

Hint: Choose your border fabric first. From your border fabric, pick out colors for the background, flower, and pot. Small prints and textures work well for small flower, leaf and stem pieces. Be sure to plan good contrast with your background.

To finish your project, you will need a piece of batting approximately 22X35 inches and a piece of backing fabric about the same size (about 3/4 yard). If you are really speedy and plan to do a plain border, bring your backing, batting and binding fabrics to class along with your walking or darning foot for your machine--you just may finish your project in one day. If you like nylon thread for quilting, bring that too.
